A touch of animation here and there, plus Rani Mukherjee with the bob hair, something different. The soundtrack was great, too, very upbeat numbers--my fave is Chak De, sung by two of my fave singers Sonu Nigam and Sadhana Sargam. There's an Alka Yagnik number, Gore Gore, that the kids love--has a kitschy feel to it. Another film I saw recently was Dhoom. A typical Bolly action movie that was a big hit in India. I saw it with some Indian friends who remarked on the many children of famous Bollywood artists starring in this movie, including Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra (both of Sholay fame)'s kids--Abhishek and Esha Deol, not to mention Uday Chopra (son of Yash Chopra). The Dhoom soundtrack was nice and lively. The title song was done in both Hindi (with Sunidhi Chauhan) and English (by Thai pop star Tata Young) versions. The English music video come as bonus during the end credits. And it also wasn't quite as bitchin' as I'd hoped. I really loved the wedding band scenes in "Monsoon Wedding" so I was trying to find more of that music. This is definitely more, but the bands aren't as high quality. But there's this recording of "Disco Dancer". I'll quote from the liner notes: "After about a 20 min. drive out of town, the Bajaj pulled up to a forsaken crumbling building amidst some waterless fields. Obviously not a very touristed or cared-for site, however there was a boy there with a fiddle waiting for anyone who happened by. He approached and beseeched us for money. Since I had almost no small change we tried to ignore him. Given that we might have been the only visitors that day, he wasn't to be put off. There is a song called Nasha Pyar Ka which was, as they say in Bolly terms, "inspired" by Toto Cotugno's festa italiana fave "L'Italiano." The movie flopped, but the soundtrack was a smash, including quite a few "inspired" numbers, such as Kali Nagin Ke Jaisi (Rachid Taha/Latif El Idrissi's Ya Rayah) and Tinak Tin Tana (Malaysian dangdut star Iwan's Yang Sedang-Sedang Saja. Ironic, considering dangdut is a fusion of Malay/Indonesian, Bollywood, Arabic, and rock). Actually, the last Bolly film I saw was Kal Ho Naa Ho, a Shahrukh Khan-Preity Zinta-Saif Ali Khan vehicle. Typical 3-hour modern epic of comedy/drama/love/ tragedy. Soundtrack was awesome, including Sonu Nigam's rendition of the title track. And a Hindi-pop rendition of Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, a legal one since actual royalties were paid to the Orbison estate. More interesting was the one I saw before that--Chameli with Kareena Kapoor and Rahul Bose (of the award-winning Mr & Mrs Iyer fame). A smallish, indie-esque production by Bollywood standards. Felt more like a stage play, Rahul is known for preferring smaller films that break the stereotypical Bollywood mold these days. Kareena, one of the reigning screen goddesses, also took quite a chance with the role of a streetwalker in this one. I thought it was funny that in the course of the movie, Ashwarya Rai slits her wrists, gets shot, and almost gets run over by a train. I would also suggest you avoid KOI MIL GAYA, the recent Bollywood venture into science fiction...singing and dancing with lots of saccharine children and a terribly plastic looking space alien. Unfortunately for me it was HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM which I had read raves about. I should have been warned because Samir Khan is really one of my least favorite actors in Bollywood (why do people talk about Sharukh over acting when this guy is such an awful ham in everything he does?) Anyway, the story was typical Bollywood fare of love and promised betrothal that cannot be. The music was actually good. But there were so many of the worst cliches in this movie that it was unbearable. Then to top it all off, Samir was supposed to be the son of an Italian singer. The movie moves location to "Italy". There are several shots of a beautiful unnamed city with many landmarks. There are people speaking in the local language. There are signs advertising this and that. There are even folk dancers. BUT IT'S ALL IN BUDAPEST AND HUNGARY! What an insult! They even have Samir jibbering something in some non-language that is supposed to sound Italianesque. UGH! OK, I hope that some of you have had better experiences with your last Bollywood adventure.
