What first turned you onto Bollywood stuff?

For me, it was the music first. I was already into the kind of Indianesque stuff various artists had done in the '60s, so when I read a review of Globestyle Records' "Golden Voices From The Silver Screen", I nabbed myself a copy of vol. 1 It blew the top of my head off! I got the other two volumes and this series still rates as my favorite. It was assembled by Nasreen Munni Kabir from his Channel 4 series "Movie Mahal". I really want to see "Movie Mahal", but I haven't seen that it's available on VHS or DVD.

My introduction to Bollywood was all of those Sunday afternoon Namaste American and India Waves type TV shows (back when I had a) cable and b) a TV).. the music was great, and the clothes *swoon*.. lots of eye- and ear-candy.

So, I started actively looking for the stuff, and got myself very very hooked. Although I've discovered that, similar to regular movies, I tend to prefer the period ones - Devdas and Lagaan and the like.

Your story reminds me that I forgot how I got into things. I first saw videos of Bollywood musicals at a club in LA in the '80s. Then when I moved up here, my fellow bandmember introduced me to "Namaste America". Despite my sometimes chancy reception, I recorded it fairly religiously. I would take down the names of any films featuring songs I dug and then go to Shrimati's in Berkeley to buy the soundtracks. That's how I happened onto that great CD that has the soundtracks for both "Howrah Bridge" and "12 O'Clock". Gosh, my memory sucks.

Well, as a child I was introduced to some "Indian" sounds via the Beatles and Ravi Shankar and my fascination grew. I was interested in world music in general and one day I picked up a Shananchie Records Sampler. My favorite song on the album was called "Dil Laga Ya Tha" by a woman named Najma. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard so I picked up the whole album (called Qareeb) and fell in love with it. Then I just started buying more and more world music compilations to find other artists I enjoyed. One day I happened to catch "Namaste America" on TV and I was in heaven, so I started narrowing my purchases to Bollywood compilations and trying to find Bollywood movies to rent. One of my favorite songs is on a compilation called "The Rough Guide To Bollywood" and it's called "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja" by Asha Bhosle & Rahul Dev Burman but actually the entire compilation is fantastic, (I listen to it all the time.) I also really enjoyed the music from "Lagaan" but couldn't find the soundtrack so I settled for the one song "Mitwa" on a compilation called "The Very Best of Bollywood Songs II" which is good as well.
I am interested in any suggestions for other albums or movies if anyone has any! Thanks! :)

Yeah, I own "Qareeb" as well. I was first introduced to "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja" by Najma's version on her album "Forbidden Kiss" which is a tribute to S. D. Burman. Of course, now that I'm familiar with the original, it's overshadowed, but it's still a fun album and well worth owning.

As for finding the soundtrack of "Lagaan", you can buy it even on Amazon, but I got a better deal buying it from a local Indian shop. Shrimati's in Berkeley has a website: http://www.shrimatis.com/ and they carry it even cheaper than Amazon. The copy I have has an extra disc with A. R. Rahman live in concert. So it's a little extra bang for your buck.

One of the rough things about being a non-Hindi speaking Bollywood fan is that there is little standardization to how the song titles are spelled in Roman letters. So I've seen "Piya Too Aab To Aaja" and other things. It makes it hard when using Google to search for lyrics. I'll talk more about my lyrics searches in another thread. I'll also put my recommended soundtrack list down.

I dont have any story like that, being an Indian I was born with bollywood. In my early day, we would rarely go out to see any movies. There were not any good kids movies, not that there are any now, so I had to depends on TV. They used to show one movie each week and no matter how horrible it was, I liked it always. I would be so mad at elders criticising it, for me each movie was a good movie.

I hope you don't mind if I answer your questions here, Amar. They might stimulate a group conversation:

>BTW, did yu watch "Dil Chahtaa Hai" ?

I didn't watch it with a lot of concentration. I kinda watched from the other room as my housemate was watching it. I think I can see why it made such a splash among the South Asian community, but it didn't catch fire with me. The characters seemed like shallow fellows to me, which made it hard for me to sympathize with them. But like I said, I was only half-paying attention when I was watching.

>And yes, Devdas was gr8- lovd the sheer magnitude of its >sets- some 80 million ruppees they spent making it..

"Devdas" is beautiful to look at. I meant to get some time to watch it myself (instead of looking over my housemate's shoulder), but I was too busy. From what I saw, the moralizing and "unavoidable" tragedy were hard to take. I think I find it hard to understand because I just wasn't raised that way. I keep thinking that if you really love someone, you don't let things like class and pre-arranged marriages get in the way. Like I said....a cultural gap for me.

For me it was a little shop in LA called New Bombay Sweets and Spices. I discovered it when an old band was recording at a studio a block away. They always had soundtracks playing, and sold tapes for something like $3. I was instantly hooked after my first purchase, Lootmar. The music mixes different styles so boldly! Where else can you find traditional, disco and rap music spun into one?
I don't have a TV, so I am not too familiar with Bollywood movies. There was an Indian restaurant new me that had a big screen TV and always played movies and music videos. Unfortunately, the joint changed ownership. The food at the new place is awesome, but I really miss the TV.
By the way, is anyone else familiar with the Lootmar soundtrack? I lost my tape quite a while ago.

Sorry, I'm unfamilar with "Lootmar". I checked Shrimati's site and they don't seem to have it. I'll keep an eye out, though.

I haven't been a big fan of recent Bollywood music, with the notable exceptions of "Lagaan" and the Vijaya Anand stuff on Luaka Bop. This is consistent with the way I feel about American musicals, too. I'm just an old-fashioned girl, in some ways. This is not to say I don't like new sounds. I do. But I just feel the style is often used without the substance behind it. And generally I'm a big fan of real honest-to-god instruments rather than synthesized ones.

I've been more a fan of traditional, disco and rap being mixed up in the bhangra and Indopop genres than the examples I've seen coming out of post-Golden Age Bollywood.

Spidra, I blame you. One hit of "Golden Voices" and I had to get all three volumes. On one hand, another addiction. On the other, I got to shock the heck out a South Asian-American friend of mine early on in our relationship by knowing who Asha Bhosle, Lata Mageshkar and Mohammed Rafi were.

I also used to watch "Namaste America" regularly when I could get it. I think it's still shown out of a station in San Jose, and if I get that 2nd dish... hmmm...

Hi, I'm new to this tribe. Odd but true, just recently I've been recording, "Showbiz India," on my Tivo. I have a "season pass" so it automatically records the show whenever it's on. Woohoo! Each week they show new videos. So, it's only been a few weeks that I've been turned onto Bollywood stuff. Can't wait to read the threads to learn more on the subject.

Pinjar literally is derived from Pinjara which means a cage. The movie is based on the novel of Amrita Pritam by the same name.

The first bollywood song I must have heard was in my Mama's belly :-) She tells me that one of her favorite activity while she was pragnant with me was to get some food packed and pick up my Dad at the railway station (he used to take train to work) and go and watch movies togather (and eat in the theatre, although my sis was already a popcorn nibbler). A nationalist wave was in the air and the National Anthem was played before and after every movie show. There was only one theatre in the town I was in, so it seems I must have heard (my eyes were still closed) the same sound track multiple times.
